After a long weekend thrifting far and wide (and mostly in the rain) tonight I fancied staying in, keeping cozy and making something. A few weeks ago I found these amazing oversized glitter bag handles at the Wills-Moody jumble sale, so I dug through my big stash of textiles and matched them up to this 1970s printed patchwork cotton tablecloth. I whipped the dust jacket off my sewing machine and got handy with the scissors. I didn’t have a pattern so I just kinda made it up as I went along…

I would liked to have made the lining a contrasting colour but I couldn’t find anything suitable in my fabric bundle, so I’ve lined it with the same fabric as the outer material. When I began, the bag was going to be much larger but I found I couldn’t gather up lots of fabric at the top which wrapped around the handles and then sew it neatly – I’m sure there’s some knack to it which I will investigate for my next attempt. All in all I’m pretty pleased with it and wondered if anyone fancied owning it? If so, just post a comment below describing your perfect bag… what features does it have, what material is it made from, what are the killer details… that kinda thing. For me, it doesn’t get much better than a cotton tote bag with long handles so I can go hands free thrifting – easy & simple!
I’ll pick a winner at random in a few days time. Good luck!

Competition Update!
The winner is… da da da… Kimberly.
Congratulations Kimberly, you’re now the owner of a lovely handmade one-of-a-kind knitting bag, I hope you enjoy using it and I love your crafty blog too.
My ideal bag would be absolutely massive. I’m one of these people that needs to take everything with them “just in case” so often my poor little arm is aching but if there’s an emergency we’ll all be fine.
It would have to be made out of something waterproof due to me putting it down on all kinds of floors in all kinds of weather, even my poor designer bags have seen a floor on a rainy day.
And it would have to be claret or burgundy, I adore that colour, it keeps me warm inside.
My absolute favourite bag is a little italian tan leather satchel that used to belong to my mum and is now mine! Its beautifully weathered and is just big enough to fit in all my essentials – namely my phone, purse and some sweets! Perfect!
My perfect bag would have to be a suede or leather medium sized bag in either black, nude or red patent… I am too indecisive to try and pick just one… A funky lining doesn’t hurt either!

Bags….what colour???…what make????? lots of different ones is what I say!!! Darling you don’t need that anymore….”Oh yes I do, I will buy a new outfit to match”!!
I’d have to have a bag with large handles with a funky pattern on the fabric, preferably a cotton or a leather, with a pocket for my phone on the inside and also a zip pocket in the inside for essentials like lip gloss, face powder and a mini brush and then plenty of room in the actual bag for all my junk :d xx
My perfect bag would be the one Mary Poppin’s had. So I could transport out a whole elephant if the situation arose.
my perfect bag would be a beautful vintage miss marple bag complete with contents! i love miss marple and wonder ‘What does she keep in her handbag?’that would be perfect and very very interesting
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
My ideal bag would be oversized enough to fit a stuffed toy and a hairbrush for sleepovers and shopping
Be waterproof
Be garish in print
One of a kind
Random and reflect a snapshot of my personality even in a glance from a distance
I’ve always been envious of Mary poppins bag! How does she do it! So I guess my ideal bag would be massive 😀
My ideal bag would be a BOHO style slung across the body bag (like a baby hammock thing lol) large, roomy and vintage. I would love one made with thrifted fabrics that were in ethnic tones (fuschias, teals, golds, silvers, creams etc) or with folk style embroidery on it oh and tassles on the zips.
*hehe* not asking for much am i??? 🙂
How do you choose an ideal bag! So many occasions, so many different bags to suit. For daily life I love my cross body one for hands free. And it has 2 outside pockets – one for phone and other for keys – as I was always juggling a child on one hip and searching for jingling keys in the bottom of other bags.
I’m in Australia so not sure if your competition extends to here?
my dream bag would be a really small yellow leather satchel. dreamy!
your diy-bag looks really cute. (: i like the fabric and the handles. for my personal taste, the bag could have been rounded, too (like ), but i also like your version.
always a hippy style bag for me for hippy days in the sun 🙂
Huge, made with a blanket, cord cross body bag
I would have a huge patterned bag with millions of pockets all the pockets wouldbe different fabrics and then i can diffirenciate what is in each pocket by the fabric….. the thing is i have soooo much in my bag now, i can never find anything!!! Haaaa ! also it would be great to put all my sewing stuff in it!
Mine would be rather large, in soft chesnut-brown leather ,quite plain outside with one heavy brass buckle fastening and a stitched leather adjustable strap .The lining would be midnight blue wild silk.
mine would would be made of a gorgeous canvas fabric with a beautiful floral print for the summer. It would be big enough to carry all my work bits and bobs as I always end up using 2 bags for work. It would have no leather parts as I am veggie and don’t use leather xxx
Pink and Pretty
Exclusive and Elite
Roomy and Rumpled
Floral and Fancy
Expansive and Especial
Cute and Crafty
Thrifted and Terrific
That would be all the things I’d like in my perfect bag 🙂
I have a bad back so don’t like big heavy bags so a knitted or fabric one is ideal as they are nice and light, preferably fitting easily over the arm and tucking under for security when I am rummiging on stalls or vintage shops. Colour or pattern whatever looks nice, probably going to knit myself a Mexican stylee one for holidays in Spain this year, arriba!
A leather rucksack, picked up from a Spanish market, almost a reddy brown colour, soft and well worn. Simple in structure it fastens at the top almost like a duffle bag with straps for wearing on the back, shoulder or hand. If i could customize i would have a gorgeous floral kitsch lining for a pretty twist! The perfect bag for all occasions and will last forever!
I already own my perfect bag! I made it when I was little, it’s blue floral cotton with white lace around the top and a blue shoulder length handle. It also has a giant yellow smiley face button (which I think was free on the fromt of a comic!) I loved it then and I love it now, my little boy likes to use it to carry his trains around the garden in, granted it’s not what it was intended for but at least he has found a practical use for it!
My ideal bag is cute and stylish, but very functional! I love bags that can fit a lot more in it than it looks. I also love compartments because I’m a total efficient freak, I like being able to get whatever I need from my purse instantly!
My perfect bag…..well there isn’t one really. I just love all bags because my day to day events change and so does my mood. I swap and change. It’s nice to have a choice, especially when you are a busy Mum and you need a change. I just bought a vintage wallet in nick condition for £1 and it would be the perfect companion for the featured bag.
Wow Leona, I love the bag! 🙂
My perfect bag, wow, well ideally it would definitely have some mary poppins and weight defying properties going on, I just always seem to over stuff the bags to bursting, or they’re too heavy to be comfy!
Otherwise though, it would be a shoulder bag, with a nice thick strap, and a satchel-style opening, but in a really fun pattern, and a brightish colour to make it pop! It would have to be big enough to fit all the essentials in, including a bottle of water, especially important for the summer!
Oh my word, where to start?! I love a good bag, the roomier and slouchier and more battered the better. Although I usually find chosing a favorite bag harder than a Monday morning…my ideal ‘in my wildest dreams’ bag would be deep tan leather, aged to perfection and butter-soft. As this all sounds very sensible, it would have to have a leopard print lining – grown up on the outside, naughty and frivolous on the inside is always the way forward after all! Plus it will inevitably be full of tattered receipts, loose pennies, kirby grips, a well-thumbed paperback and exactly three black eyeliners of varying size and age, so the lining needs to be suitably delicious to detract from the mess that lurks within! Ooh, and some super slouchy shoulder straps please! Yep, sounds pretty ideal to me.
I would love to own a Hermes Birkin bag, for me that is the classic bag that has never and ever will age. Infact it is one of those designs that will be forever a classic, but sadly out of my range. My favourite is bag is one I got out of a charity shop, in black vlevet, with lots of braiding, pom poms, a medal and a smiley badge which makes me smile when I am blue. Its size is deceptive, as it holds all my stuff and still have plenty of room to put my kids bits in. I always get lot of complements about it and noone can belive that it came from a charity shop!!! that is my favourite bag
If I won it, it would be my new favorite bag! 🙂 *crosses fingers*
Oooh is this still open? Either way, I’m going to bore you about my favourite (imaginary) bag:
So it’s tan leather classic clasp shape, with brass hoop attachments for the handles, brass studs underneath and a brass zipped pocket on the front. It would be vintage with an emerald green silk lining and would make any crappy outfit I threw on look amazing. Sigh…
My perfect bag…would have to be a super floppy rucksack, about the shape and size of a teddy bear’s bean bag chair. That’s what you’d think it was when it was on the floor, a tiny bean bag.
It would be patchwork, with the patches shaped like stars – I have no idea how difficult that would be to make, but this is like a dream bag after all – sewn together with silver thread and it would have my initials in strawberry-shaped buttons on the outside pocket. The pocket would have a big fake daisy keyring on the neon blue zip and inside it would have lots of little pockets so to hold all my Sharpie pens in order and a little sketchbook. The lining of the bag and the pocket would be blue silk with clouds printed on it, and it would fasten with lime green chord with shells on the two end bits you pulled to close the bag. It would have rainbow-striped straps too with badges all down, and inside there would be a tiny alarm so if I even lost it I could press the button on my keys and it would play ‘Follow The Yellow Brick Road’ as a way of finding it again. Can it also have a tracking device so I can find it if it’s stolen?!
darn it!!! i wanted it!!!!!
Oh wow I’m a very lucky girl! SO excited as I have the perfect knitting project waiting for this bag, it’s a 1950s knitting kit my mum found in her aunt’s loft, a really old school fairisle sweater, now it can snuggle up in it’s beautiful vintage hand-made home, thanks Leona!
extremely helpful material, in general I picture this is worthy of a book mark, thank you
For me it would have to be my leather satchel backpack. I find it perfect for car booting as I can bend (and flex) to look at things without getting swung in the face like my over the shoulder bag tends to do! xox
