Upon turning the corner into White Post Lane this morning my heart sunk a little as I counted just 8 stalls at this month’s Hackney Wick Flea Market. It had only taken me 5 minutes to walk there but if I was feeling disappointed how could I recommend my local flea if some folks might travel from other parts of London? Although, I should really know by now that it’s not the quantity of stalls that matters; I can go to a carboot sale with over 500 sellers and end up spending all my money with just one or two people. The collection of kitchen timers included a bunny, kettle, toaster, pear, apple, pig, can of coke, can of sweetcorn, carrot, juicer, egg, red pepper, lemon, bar of chocolate and more. Why didn’t I buy them? I think I was peeved that I couldn’t swap something of mine for them – why call yourself Swap Shop if you only sell stuff? This has kind of got me thinking about adding a Swap Shop section to Thrift-ola. What do you think?

If you’re looking for a nice little old fashioned pub to meet up with your gal pals on a Thursday night then I can recommend The Kenton in Hackney. Go straight from work and you can have a pie ‘n’ mash dinner, cut price cocktails and the obligatory cupcake. Best of all? In the corner you’ll find Jo and friends with a good selection of jumble fun with jumble price tags to match. I was tempted by a Hawaiian jump suit, but I think I’d had one cocktail too many…

Last weekend my friend and I went thrifting along the Sussex coast and I picked up three lovely vintage typewriters. A 1950’s Halda made in Sweden, a 1960’s Petite made in England and a 1980’s Blue Fox made in Japan. Brush aside the digital age today and fall in love with letter writing the old fashioned way, create that zine you’ve always talked about or simply have fun writing your weekly shopping list. Maybe you might just write a masterpiece on it like these famous authors did on their typewriters.

Tomorrow morning I start a 2 day a week internship! It’ll be the first time I’ve gone to work in a studio for someone else in about 10 years. Eek. On the weekend I decided to thrift some stuff I might need… a book to read on the long tube journey, some Tupperware for my homemade lunch, a 1950’s notebook (which matches what I’ll be working on during my first week) and a deer cross stitch kit so I’ve got something to do at lunchtime. Wish me luck!
